A Lady
A Lady is the exact sort of book I would have devoured as a teenager. A young woman getting herself involved in espionage during the American Revolution? A plucky heroine determined to find her own way in the world? A romance that shifts between both parties being irritated with each other and mutual respect? I would have read that in a single sitting.
Honegger has crafted a fun novel that, while occasionally light on characterization, is consistently filled with action and intrigue. Mary André’s search for a purpose leads her unwittingly to Valley Forge, where she encounters a roster of historical figures from Lafayette to George Washington himself. Honegger does an excellent job of keeping the pace moving and keeping readers engaged. Never once did I feel as though the book had bogged me down.
I would highly recommend this book for teens who enjoy historical fiction, especially those who might be interested in looking up the history behind Washington’s spy ring. Fans of Eva Ibbotson especially will enjoy this wartime romance full of bold action and bolder men and women.
