Secret Garden: A Graphic Novel

Recent orphan, Mary Lennox, moves to Misselthwaite Manor to live with her wealthy, but absent, Uncle Craven. Lonely and spoiled, she is unhappy to move to such a gloomy place. Upon meeting and befriending Dickon, Mary becomes a happy and hopeful child again. Not only does Mary discover a secret garden, but she also ends up discovering some other secrets about Misselthwaite Manor.

While the cover of the book drew me in, the illustrations on the inside were rather disappointing. The colors were very muted and dreary. I get that the moors were gloomy, but the whole book felt very dreary. I wished the colors were more vibrant, and I really disliked the noses on the characters. While I didn’t read the original novel so I can’t speak for how this adaptation compares with the original, I felt the story was lacking. The characters were dull, and I didn’t care for any one of them–not even Mary. Maybe I just don’t like the original story. I didn’t understand or feel any of the magic in the story. I read and love graphic novels, especially middle-grade and young adults, but I just didn’t love this one.
