Making a Scene
In this candid autobiography of actress Constance Wu, star of the movie Crazy Rich Asians and the television show Fresh Off the Boat, Wu gives readers an insight into her childhood, relationships, and her infamous blowup on Twitter. As an Asian American, Wu was able to break into showbiz which was something that was not mainstream back in the 90s and early 2000s. Trying to find herself while living in New York was hard as a girl who had grown up in Virginia, but the harassment she faced was something Wu had to work against while not blowing up at her superiors. She describes herself as someone who wore her emotions and would almost instantly cry when she couldn’t find the words. I found her relationships to be really interesting, both romantic and familial. Unlike many mothers, hers was not the stereotypical tiger mom. Wu describes her mother as always being so beautiful and gracious. Her boyfriends ranged from sweet and successful to abusive and selfish.
Making a Scene is beautifully written with a few much-treasured photos of Constance thrown in. This is a great book that will inspire Asian American girls looking to follow in the footsteps of the actress.
