The Wretched and Undone
The Anderwalds and their descendants are The Wretched and Undone. Polish immigrants seeking a fresh start in Texas just before the start of the Civil War, Marcin and Agnieszka find only nightmares and heartache. Tragedy after tragedy continues to strike and it seems that a curse has befallen their family that may never end. Throughout generations, their story unfolds as each member wonders if they will ever break free.
While incredibly sad, this story is well written and makes you feel as if these are real people that you are traversing history with. This tale is full of broken and damaged people who try their best to fight evil and right wrongs, but still go through an incredible amount of sorrow. Even though their experiences are probably not that different from most of the early settlers, the story is written so that it does feel like a curse is tormenting this family. If you enjoy historical fiction, this book is for you. Just be warned, there are no happy endings here and you will find it hard not to get emotionally invested.
