The Secrets of Hartwood Hall
Recently widowed, Margaret Lennox takes a governess position for Louis, an only child, at a large country house. It isn’t long before she realizes that something isn’t quite right. The villagers all speak of ghosts and evil, alluding to The Secrets of Hartwood Hall. They claim that it’s cursed and something is wrong with Mrs. Eversham, Louis’ mother.
Margaret comes to love Louis and the people at Hartwood, but she can’t deny that she is seeing and hearing things. She’ll have to decide if all the secrets are worth keeping if she wants to make a new life here, away from her own troubled past.
Give me a Victorian gothic mystery any day of the week. The plot was incredibly interesting and I can honestly say I did not see the end coming. This story is very atmospheric, making you feel as if you are in the Victorian England countryside, full of ghostly possibilities. If you enjoy this genre, you will love this and I would add if you love classics like Jane Eyre, you will also love this.
