The Necromancer’s Apprentice

Georgie has been his father’s anchor since his mother died years before. He’ll do anything to keep him from falling so deep into his grief he never returns. Even learning to raise the dead to bring her back. But necromancy is nothing like he expects and the wizard isn’t very helpful. So Georgie takes things into his own hands, for better or worse, he’ll find out what magic really can do.

This did not feel like a middle-grade novel, sure Georgie is a kid, but teens and adults can enjoy it. The story itself isn’t a light read; it’s about loss and grief and how it affects everyone differently. And how others grief effects the people around them.

The characters are all fun and unique, there aren’t very many to keep track of either, which is nice. They all have names, but in a child-like way most are referred to as what they are; the Blacksmith, the Wizard. It definitely is written from the perspective of a child. The end was a little unexpected, but falls into the theme of what grief can do.
