Not the Witch You Wed (Supernatural Singles, 1)
Not the Witch You Wed is a charming novel about a supposed magicless witch unexpectedly coming into her powers. Author April Asher creates a modern-day fantastical universe full of different types of mystical humanoid creatures. Many of the side characters are clever but none are particularly fleshed out. The universe the author builds feels two dimensional and almost reads like it’s a fanfiction of something else. If you like tropes, this is the book for you. It seems like instead of plot, Asher just dropped one trope after another into a bubbling cauldron and whatever spilled out, spilled out. Most of the characters’ personalities are wrapped around what they look like and how attracted to each other they are. In fact, Asher makes the mistake of giving her characters magical qualities in place of personality traits. Still, Not the Witch You Wed is truly a fun and fast read. The witty banter and the Alpha male vibes carry the book through to the end. Overall, it’s basically just cotton candy of a romance novel; an enjoyable read that’s airy and light on the tongue but lacking any substance.
