Ms. Marvel: Remnants of the Past
Superhero by night, normal desi girl by day, Kamala thinks she has life figured out. Well, as much as any teenager who’s totally not crushing on her best friend or dealing with supervillains can. But the excitement never ends when a museum is robbed and Kingpin himself has something to do with it. She just has to figure out what and to find out she’ll have to face her parents, her culture and her history. It even takes her far from home, to her Abu’s homeland in another country.
The story is littered with bits and pieces about Pakistan and it’s history, woven in such a away that it’s not over done. It also dives into colonization in the past and how many artifacts and relics were stolen and yet to be returned to their home countries. This is a heavy theme in the book, the facts are presented and discussed but not over done. Kamala was annoying, she claims almost everyone around her arrogant and stuck up, when she herself is. Really, though, most the characters are, and I found most of them annoying. She does change and grow by the end of the story, it just has to do with how she views her family.
