Delicates (2) (Sheets)
Marjorie Glatt sees a group of ghosts who live in her family’s laundromat. One of the ghosts, Wendell, becomes a close and only friend to Marjorie. During the summer, Marjorie starts hanging out with the popular kids in school and doesn’t have enough time to spend with Wendell. Eliza Duncan, a ghost-obsessed teen, befriends Wendell without realizing that he is an actual ghost. Wendell and Eliza could pose a threat to Marjorie’s social life with the popular kids.
Delicates is a painful and beautiful look at teenage friendships and the struggles of fitting in at school. The story involves difficult topics such as popularity, bullying, loss, and suicide, and Brenna Thummler does an amazing job of creating a relatable and engaging story around those issues. The art is beautiful, and I especially loved the colors that were used. They gave the scenes a more retro and vintage look. I have not read the first book in the series, Sheets, but I felt this sequel stood on its own. I highly recommend this book to graphic novel and art enthusiasts as well as to anyone who loves an endearing story about friendship.
