Dear Hanna: A Novel
As the follow up novel to Baby Teeth, Dear Hanna follows Hanna, who terrorized her mother as a young child and even tried to kill her. Now an adult, she leads an apparently normal life, with a career, husband, and teenage stepdaughter. However, old wounds come to light when Hanna’s stepdaughter reveals a big life change. Her tidy life is thrown for a loop, and Hanna reverts to some of her old ways. Can she keep her parents and past mistakes hidden from her new family?
Hanna’s actions throughout the story demonstrate sociopathic tendencies, as she lacks empathy for hurting others. However, she does love those close to her and will do anything to protect them. In this regard, I related to Hanna, though her means of protection were quite sinister! This book was twisted, yet hard to put down. It can be read as a standalone novel, though first reading Baby Teeth allows the reader to fully understand Hanna. I found it fascinating to read Hanna’s point of view and why she reacted to things in certain ways. Author Zoje Stage flourishes in creating layered, manipulative, and deranged characters!
