A Philosophy of Thieves (The Canarvier Files)
It’s one job, one performance, bigger than anything they’ve ever done, and without King, their Father and leader. But Dax and Roo don’t have a choice if they want to get him back before he’s sent to Alaska. Nan is against the idea, and with secrets to hide, it’s no wonder. The Canarviers are performers, thieves for hire, and entertainment, but the job doesn’t come without risks; if they’re caught, they’ll be sent to jail and risk losing any money they earn on the job. But there’s more at stake than Roo or Dax realizes, more secrets to uncover; some that should stay buried and some that should come to light.
An interesting concept, set in a future dystopian world, this book is a mix of fantasy heist and sci-fi tech. I wouldn’t call it steampunk, though. The characters are bland, their motives either unclear or unused. Most felt like a copy and paste of each other. The perspective bounced around between all the main characters, but none had unique voices, and it was confusing when the point of view switched in the middle of a chapter; sometimes there wasn’t a break, either. The plot changes halfway through, and it was not an easy transition.
